Men’s Soccer Edged 2-1 at William & Mary

Tribe nets game-winning goal on a PK in 74th minute

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Alfredo Bozalongo converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute, leading William & Mary (1-0-0) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (0-1-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Thursday evening at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The match marked the start of the Bearcats' 22nd season at the NCAA Division I level.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the 74th minute, the Bearcats were called for a foul inside the box. Bozalongo then fired his penalty kick attempt into the lower-right corner of the net, giving the Tribe the lead for good.

Binghamton started off the match strong as junior forward Mael Lopes broke a scoreless tie in the 26th minute. Graduate student midfielder Jack Green's initial shot was stopped by Tribe goalkeeper Cole McNally. Lopes, however, got the rebound and scored from eight yards away. Green was credited with the assist.

William & Mary, however, deadlocked the match in the 38th minute. Auggie Cooper headed a corner kick by Gabe Ruitenberg into the upper-right part of the net.

William & Mary finished the match with an 18-6 advantage in total shots as well as a 9-2 cushion in shots on goal. The Tribe also had a 59-41 percentage lead in time of possession.

"William & Mary is a good team that is disciplined and well coached," head coach Paul Marco said. "Still, it was disappointing that we were not able to hold on the lead and that we gave up both goals on set plays. We came out well in the first half but got fatigued in the second half."

Graduate student goalkeeper Dylan McDermott made six saves in his first career start at Binghamton. He transferred from Marist during the offseason.

Defensively, the Bearcats also blocked four of William & Mary's shots.

Up next for Binghamton is a trip to top-ranked and defending national champion Syracuse on Monday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: McDermott, Lopes and Green were three of the six newcomers in the Bearcats' starting lineup. They were joined by freshman midfielder Alex Balkey, freshman forward Anthony Randazzo and sophomore midfielder Calvin Moe.
