Men’s Soccer Defeated 3-0 by Top-Ranked Syracuse

Orange break open match with a pair of second-half goals

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Top-ranked Syracuse (2-0-0) scored once in the first half and added a pair of second-half goals to defeat Binghamton (0-2-0) 3-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game at the SU Soccer Stadium on Monday evening. The match marked the first time that the Bearcats have faced the No. 1 team in the nation - as well as the defending NCAA champions - since 2006.

The Orange, who are now unbeaten in their last 16 games, have outscored their opposition 5-0 so far this season. In the process, they have surrendered only five total shots.

After 27 minutes of scoreless action, Gabriel Mikina put Syracuse up 1-0 on a rebound from close range. The assists were credited to Nathaniel Edwards and Mateo Leveque.

Binghamton stayed within striking distance until the 56th minute, when Josh Belluz headed in a cross by Giona Leibold. Exactly 20 minutes later, Lorenzo Boselli netted his third goal of the season, giving the Orange the cushion it needed to finish off the match.

"Syracuse was terrific tonight and they are a very good team," head coach Paul Marco said. "I thought we were very good for most of the match in sticking to our game plan but the goals we allowed came when we weren't good on set pieces and when we misplayed balls in the box."

In goal, graduate student Dylan McDermott made five saves for the Bearcats - four of which came in the first half.

Syracuse outshot the Bearcats 17-1 for the game and had all eight shots on goal.

Binghamton travels to Colgate on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.

NOTES: Binghamton's most recent game against the top-ranked team in the nation - as well as the defending NCAA Champions - was a 3-0 defeat at Maryland on August 27, 2006.
