Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Women's soccer edged at Syracuse 2-1

Luke nets first collegiate goal; Bearcats back home Thursday against Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Host Syracuse (2-2) snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 63rd minute and edged visiting Binghamton women's soccer (0-3-1) 2-1 Sunday night at the SU Soccer Stadium.

The Bearcats played a strong game against their ACC member opponents and used a goal by freshman forward Paige Luke to pull even at the half. Graduate midfielder Olivia McKnight found Luke on the doorstep and she banged home her first collegiate goal.

The Orange struck first just 7:08 into the game before Luke answered in the 17th minute. The teams played the next 45 minutes scoreless before Syracuse benefited from an own goal. A shot from the right was inadvertently knocked in by a Bearcats defender and that stood as the game-winner, despite a late surge from the Bearcats, who registered five shots and three corners in the second half.

Junior keeper Kaitlyn Williams made six saves.

"I'm really proud of our team and the gutsy performance they showed tonight," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We knew it would be a terrific atmosphere playing at night at the SU Soccer Complex and we felt like we gave the crowd a good show.  It was nice to score our first goal, played through a fouls disparity, and most of all kept a sustained intensity over a full 90 minutes which is something we strived to do. We're disappointed in that we didn't get a result to walk away with but we know if we play like that then we will set ourselves up for success these upcoming weeks."

Binghamton returns home to host Le Moyne at 6:07 p.m. Thursday night. Fans can attend the game free of charge, thanks to this athletics department initiative
