Women's soccer bounces Le Moyne 3-0

Vegoda tallies goal, assist as BU remains unbeaten at home

VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior back Lexi Vegoda tallied a goal and an assist to pace Binghamton women's soccer (1-3-1) to a 3-0 shutout win over visiting Le Moyne (1-3) Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats held 70 percent of the possession and broke open a 1-0 game with two goals in a 10-minute span midway through the second half. Binghamton outshot the Dolphins 25-3 and was able to get 25 players into the game.

"It's a good feeling to get that first win," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We really tested ourselves with a very ambitious schedule to this point and we wanted to see the fruits of our labor so to speak. It was good for us to get that first goal, especially early in the first half and then good to knock in two more in the second half and preserve the shutout. Hopefully we can take this momentum with us on the road Sunday."

Binghamton opened the scoring in the 11th minute, thanks to a hard run up the right side by junior forward Hannah Mimas. After blazing past two defenders and into the box, Mimas sent a cross into the middle, where the McKnight twins took over. Graduate midfielder Victoria McKnight flicked the ball up toward the far post, where graduate midfielder Olivia McKnight headed it home from five yards out.

The Bearcats held an 11-1 shots advantage and took the 1-0 lead into half.

In the second half, freshman forward Lauren Clark put her mark on the game. In the 58th minute, she ripped a shot off the crossbar and then five minutes later, cashed in. Senior back Lexi Vegoda drove down the left flank and sent a cross into the middle that found its way to Clark's foot. She then unleashed a left-footed shot from eight yards out that tucked inside the far post, making it 2-0. It was Clark's first collegiate goal.

Vegoda then finished the scoring 72nd minute with a penalty conversion. Junior forward Hannah Knych was taken down on the right side of the box and Vegoda made good on her 12-yard strike.

Junior keeper Kaitlyn Williams worked the first 82 minutes and made two saves before freshman Rebecca Kessler made her collegiate debut and handled the final eight minutes.

Binghamton heads to Staten Island on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tilt at Wagner.
