Volleyball Heads West for Buffalo Invite

BU looks to continue Bearcat Classic success

VESTAL, N.Y - The Binghamton University volleyball team (3-0) will travel to Amherst, N.Y. for a invitational hosted by the University at Buffalo's, Aug. 31-Sept.2. Games will be streamed live on UB's Youtube channel here

The competition will feature Bearcat matches against the University of Montana, Thursday at 2 p.m, DePaul University, Friday at 2 p.m., and UB, Saturday at 3 p.m. The full invitational schedule is listed below. 

BU started the 2023 campaign on the right track last weekend with three wins against Merrimack, Duquesne and Saint Peter's inside the Events Center. The team performance earned them the Bearcat Classic title and an undefeated first weekend of play. Binghamton held their opponents to just a .079 hitting percentage and averaged 3.1 aces per set. 

Ella Schabort earned BU's first America East weekly award of the fall season, earning herself a Rookie of the Week nod for her Bearcat Classic efforts. She tallied 31 kills, 22 digs, eight blocks and four service aces across three matches, earning her an All-Tournament distinction. The Australian posted a double-double in just her second appearance as a Bearcat in BU's 3-1 win over Duquesne, Saturday afternoon, collecting a team-high 17 kills and 10 digs, along with three blocks and three service aces. The first-year player also notched a .259 hitting percentage in the team's 3-0 sweep of Merrimack Friday night. 

Tsvetlina Ilieva recorded 32 kills, 26 digs, nine service aces and five total blocks to lead Binghamton to a Bearcat Classic title and earn herself a All-Tournament MVP nod this weekend. Against Duquesne on Saturday, Ilieva put up her first double-double of the season with a team-high 17 kills and 12 digs, the seventh in career at BU. In the team's 3-0 sweep of Merrimack Friday night, she posted a .364 hitting percentage and combined for a .284 percentage in all three matches.

Anna Sprys also earned All-Tournament nods with 14 kills and 11 blocks, including two block solos. Sprys hit for an impressive .481  and accounted for 21.5 points across the three matches. 

Binghamton hosts non-conference opponent LeMoyne at home, Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. before heading to Bethlehem, Pa. the following weekend, Sep. 8-9, for Lehigh University's Steel Classic.
