VESTAL, N.Y. -- Each semester, the Binghamton Athletic Department holds a breakfast for its student-athletes who attained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous semester. There were 58 student-athletes who earned a 4.0 GPA during the Spring 2023 semester.
Those student-athletes were able to take a break and be honored for their hard work and dedication to their education on Thursday morning in the TAU Room of the Events Center. Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger and Athletic Director Gene Marshall were on hand to honor them.
"I look to be the best I can be on the field and in the classroom, so this is a great honor to be recognized with this breakfast," men's soccer player Diego Vargas. "For me, I always have a willingness to learn every time I am in class or studying."
"Being at the breakfast this morning was very fulfilling because it shows that hard work and dedication in the classroom payed off," softball player Lindsey Walter said, "The best advice I could give is to get organized from the beginning. I personally print out the calendars that each professor includes in their syllabus and hang them by my desk. Organization and structure are key to my success. Another imperative skill to have while in college is learning how to study effectively. Finding your own personal study style will lead to greater success on exams. Memorizing details and rereading notes is simply not enough, especially for my major. Practice problems are tedious but they are essential to gaining a greater understanding. Similar to sports where extra practice will prepare you for competition, extra practice in the classroom will prepare you for exams."
"It feels great to be recognized as a student athlete for the hard work we put in to our academics," track and cross country runner Sheridan Talada said. "I'm so appreciative that Binghamton values our academic efforts as much as our athletic efforts. I've found that studying with a group helps me better absorb class content and also makes the coursework more manageable. Finding time to study while also keeping time to relax and de-stress is crucial for academic success."
Overall, Binghamton University student athletes had a 3.42 grade-point average for the Spring 2023 semester. It's the 13th consecutive semester the group has surpassed a 3.2 GPA.
