Men’s Soccer Wins 2-0 at Canisius

Bearcats break match open with pair of goals in 49 seconds

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Graduate student back Devin Heanue and freshman midfielder Marcus Nahim each scored within a 49-second span midway through the second half, powering Binghamton (2-4) to a 2-0 victory over Canisius (1-4-1) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The victory is the Bearcats' second in their past three matches and also represents their first shutout of the season.

For the second meeting in a row between the two squads, the Bearcats held a huge advantage in terms of shots. Binghamton finished with a 22-6 cushion in total shots as well as 9-1 in shots on goal. Unlike last year, however, when the two teams played to a 0-0 tie, Binghamton was able to find the back of the net.

Heanue's goal, which was his first of the year and third of his career, came at the 64:53 mark of the game. It was set up by junior back Charlie Kaldor, who dribbled the ball on the endline towards the goal. He then passed the ball to Heanue who one-timed it from the top of the box into the net.

Just 49 seconds later, Nahim got by the defense and fired an initial shot from close range. It was saved by Canisius goalkeeper Spencer Catalano but the rebound came right back to Nahim who blasted it into the goal.

Although Binghamton did not score another goal, it kept up the same intensity the rest of the match. The Bearcats outshot the Golden Griffs 5-1 in the final 20 minutes of play.

Graduate student goalkeeper Dylan McDermott only needed to make one save in recording his first solo shutout of the season.

"I thought we were very good in all phases of the game," head coach Paul Marco said. "We were very good at sustaining our attack, our possession was good, we created chances and our backs were all great."

In addition to their offensive heroics, Heanue and Kaldor were part of the back line that only surrendered one shot on goal. The two of them, along with graduate students Michael Bush and Will Noecker, played the entire 90 minutes of the match.

Binghamton returns to action next Tuesday, when it hosts St. Peter's at 6:07 p.m.

NOTES: The program record for the fastest two-goal span remains 35 seconds, which also came at Canisius. The Bearcats won that match 5-1 back on Sept. 23, 2017 … in last year's scoreless draw against the Golden Griffs, which took place at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Sept. 17, Binghamton finished with an overwhelming 21-2 shot advantage.
