Men’s Soccer Ties No. 18 New Hampshire 0-0

Root makes four saves in first start as a Bearcat

VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton (2-5-1, 0-0-1 AE) played a scoreless tie against No. 18 New Hampshire (4-1-2, 0-0-1 AE) in an America East men's soccer match on Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the tie, the Bearcats picked up an important point in the conference standings in their first America East action of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Root finished with four saves to record the shutout in his first start since transferring from Concord last year. Included in his stops was a lunging save from close range in the 86th minute to keep the game scoreless.

New Hampshire out shot Binghamton 17-4 and held a shots-on-goal advantage of 4-1. The Wildcats also finished with a 69-31 percent lead in possession time. The Bearcat defense, however, blocked several shots and kept others off target to record their second shutout in the past three games.

"I thought our guys gave a great response in tonight's match," head coach Paul Marco said. "It was a terrific group effort and they really showed some competitive spirit tonight. Jack was outstanding in goal tonight."

The last time Binghamton tied a nationally-ranked team was on Sept. 14, 2018. The Bearcats tied then No. 18 Colgate 1-1.

Binghamton heads to Hofstra on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.

NOTES: The Wildcats, who are No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Poll, represent the second nationally-ranked team that Bearcats have faced this season. The first was then top-ranked Syracuse back on Aug. 28.
