Women's soccer settles for 2-2 draw with Albany

BU extends unbeaten streak to four; Clark and Reid tally goals before Great Danes tie it late

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Albany women's soccer (3-5-2, 0-1-2 America East) scored twice in the final four minutes to forge a 2-2 tie with Binghamton (3-4-4, 2-0-1 AE) Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the tie, BU extended its unbeaten streak to four and remained unbeaten in conference play but a Great Danes tying goal with just three seconds remaining put a damper on the result.

The Bearcats held a comfortable 60% possession margin and 21-11 shots advantage and seemed destined for three points with a 2-1 lead and the ball at their offensive corner flag with 48 seconds left. But a giveaway and quick Albany counter led to a frantic corner kick sequence in the closing seconds. A header off the corner was knocked down by junior keeper Kaitlyn Williams but the Great Danes tapped in the rebound on the doorstep to secure the tie.

"We are pretty gutted," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We could have put the game away earlier but having said that, we need to do a better job playing out the last four minutes. There are some things we typically do in game management that we didn't do tonight and it should've been three points. We are disappointed but we have to live it, accept it and get ready for Bryant on Sunday."

Binghamton struck first in the 34th minute when senior back Lexi Vegoda sent a long ball in from the left side. Senior back Grace Vittoria chipped it back toward the goalmouth, where sophomore forward Lauren Clark headed it in from close range. It was Clark's team-high fourth goal of the season.

The Bearcats led 1-0 at half and doubled their lead in the 61st minute after a corner kick. Vegoda curled the ball into a dangerous spot and two Albany defenders failed to clear it. Sophomore forward Samiya Reid took it away, spun and banged it home from three yards. It was her first goal of the season.

But the Great Danes got on the board with 4:04 left after a break down the left flank led to a cutback pass and tap in goal from 10 yards out. That goal set up the dramatic closing seconds as Albany rallied in unlikely fashion. The teams have now played 12 games in Vestal and are 4-4-4.

Binghamton next heads to Rhode Island and a noon contest Sunday at Bryant.
