Volleyball Claims Victory Over FDU 3-2

Ilieva records fourth double-double of the season in win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Binghamton University volleyball team (5-3) won a five set battle over Fairleigh Dickinson 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21, 15-8) in its first game of the Lehigh Steel Classic Friday afternoon.

Tsvetelina Ilieva recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs, along with three service aces and a block. Ella Schabort also collected 13 kills, two service aces and a season-high five blocks in the victory.

Lydia Adam posted a season-best .538 hitting percentage with eight kills and four blocks. Misa Dlouha and Anna Sprys led the Bearcats at the net with seven blocks apiece, a season-high for Sprys. Madison Konopka commanded the back row for BU with a team-high 15 digs.

Binghamton and Fairleigh Dickinson started the first set similarly, trading points until FDU went on a 5-0 run to bring the frame to 8-4. The Bearcats gained on the Knights, coming within two points at 14-12. Fairleigh Dickinson scored three straight points to increase their advantage to five at 17-12. BU was just two points from the lead at 21-19 before FDU notched three kills and a service ace to close out the set 25-19.

The Bearcats flipped the script in the second set, jumping out to an early 4-0 to start the stanza. Binghamton never once let go of their advantage, leading by as much as nine points at 15-6.  FDU collected six points to BU's four over the next 10 sequences to bring the set score to 19-12. The Knights tallied just five more points to the Bearcats' six as BU claimed the set victory 25-17.

The third set was the most competitive between the two teams with 13 ties and six lead changes. After FDU and BU went on separate 3-0 runs to begin the frame 3-3, neither team would win more than three consecutive points again in the frame. The Bearcats pulled ahead by just two at 22-20 with a kill from Sprys and a service ace from Ilieva until the Knights tied it up once again 22-22. Both squads traded points in the final sequences of the set before Fairleigh Dickinson won the third set 27-25.

With their backs against the wall, the Bearcats secured a fourth set win 25-21 to stay in the match. BU went on an early 5-0 run to take the lead 6-1 before FDU went on its own run to equalize the frame at seven. Neither Binghamton nor Fairleigh Dickinson led by more than three points until a ball handling error by FDU brought BU ahead 24-20. Ilieva closed out the set 25-21 with a kill just two sequences later.

Binghamton controlled Fairleigh Dickinson in the deciding set, never letting their opponents score more than two consecutive points in the frame. BU led early in the set at 4-1 and furthered their lead to 7-2. The Knights added four points to the Bearcats' two in the next six sequences to bring the set score within three at 9-6 before Binghamton went on three separate 2-0 runs to take the final set by seven at 15-8.

BU will take on hosts Lehigh at 12:30 p.m and Delaware State at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow to close out the invitational.
