ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany (10-7, 2-0 America East) built a 10-point halftime lead and defeated visiting Binghamton men's basketball (8-7, 0-2 AE) 95-75 Saturday afternoon at Broadview Center.
Binghamton outshot UAlbany but the Great Danes benefited from 24 more shot attempts. Albany used 17 offensive rebounds and 14 BU turnovers to score the most points Binghamton has surrendered to a conference opponent in six years.
Three times in the second half BU trimmed its deficit to eight but couldn't draw closer. The last time was after a layup from senior forward
Nehemiah Benson with 12:43 left that made it 60-52. But UAlbany followed with a 19-6 run to put the game away.
Graduate forward
Armon Harried led the Bearcats with a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Graduate point guard
Symir Torrence, who entered the game fourth in the nation in assists (7.1/game) flirted with a triple-double before settling on 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Senior center
Tariq Balogun added 12 points in 19 minutes, Benson tallied 11 points and senior guard
Tymu Chenery gave BU five double-digit scorers with 10 points. Â
"This was the second game in a row that our turnovers put us in a bad spot," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "We knew we had to rebound and not turn the ball over and we didn't do either today. It's hard to win if you don't take care of the ball. We have a lot of games left but we have to get better." Â
UAlbany opened up a double-digit lead halfway through the first half thanks to a 12-0 run that spanned three minutes. The Bearcats hit 11-of-17 to start and shot above 60 percent for most of the half. But the Great Danes controlled the glass (12 offensive rebounds) and took advantage of 11 BU turnovers to gain 17 more shot attempts and a subsequent 45-35 halftime cushion.
Binghamton begins two straight at home with a test against two-time reigning champion Vermont Thursday night at the Events Center.Â
