Women’s Basketball Defeated 51-38 by Vermont

Coleman nets game-high 17 points, Weltz grabs seven rebounds

BURLINGTON, V.T. — Junior forward Genevieve Coleman turned in a game-high 17 points but Binghamton (5-12, 0-4 AE) lost 51-38 to Vermont (12-7, 4-1 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Thursday evening at Patrick Gym. The contest marked the first road game for the Bearcats since Dec. 20 and came against the preseason favorite to win the America East title.

Coleman, who went 8-for-14 from the field against the Catamounts, also grabbed six rebounds. She is now averaging 10.8 points per game this season and in her last three games alone, she has averaged 14.3 points.

Anna Olson led Vermont with 11 points, going 5-for-9 from the field. Coming off the bench, Andjela Matic added nine points.

Coleman had nine of her points in the first period as the Bearcats were up 13-8 after 10 minutes. They led that entire stretch.

Vermont finally got their first lead of the game in the waning seconds of the first half. Delaney Richason sank a three-point field goal with four seconds to go, giving the Catamounts a 23-21 lead at the break.

Binghamton was within 33-31 until Vermont went on an 11-2 run in a stretch of 7:25 to go up 44-33 with 5:29 left in the game. Keira Hanson led the Catamounts with six points during that stretch.

The Bearcats got no closer than eight points (44-36) the rest of the way.

Redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz grabbed a game-best seven rebounds and dished out three assists to go along with four points. Graduate student guard Denai Bowman added six points, three steals, a block and an assist..

Vermont shot 40 percent for the game (20-50), including 58.3 percent (7-of-12) during the third period alone. The Catamounts also held a 32-22 advantage in points in the paint. Binghamton, by contrast, shot just 32.1 percent (17-of-53) for the game.

Binghamton led 35-33 in rebounds but turned the ball over 16 times compared to 11 times for the Catamounts.

Bowman now has 1,335 points for her career and remains in seventh place all time in program history. She needs six points to tie - and seven points to pass - Leah Truncale (1998-02), who scored 1,341 points during her career.

Binghamton heads to UMass Lowell on Saturday for a 2 p.m. conference game.
