Women’s Basketball Defeats UMass Lowell 70-65

Bowman nets game-high 21 points, Weltz adds 20 points

LOWELL, Mass. — Graduate student guard Denai Bowman and redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz  scored 21 and 20 points respectively, leading Binghamton (6-12, 1-4 AE) to a 70-65 victory over UMass Lowell (3-15, 3-3 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Center. The victory ended a two-game road swing for the Bearcats.

Bowman went 8-for-11 from the field, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and had a pair of steals. She is now ranked sixth all-time in Binghamton program history with 1,356 career points. Against the River Hawks, she surpassed Leah Truncale (1998-02), who scored 1,341 points during her career.

Bowman also had two blocks, moving her into eighth place in Binghamton program history with 80 rejections. Against UMass Lowell, she moved past Alicia Koppenhoefer (1990-94) who finished her career with 79 blocks.

Weltz, meanwhile, shot 8-for-15 from the field and made all three of her free throws. She also filled up the stat sheet with four rebounds, a pair of assists and a team-high three steals.

The River Hawks appeared to be in control of the game, as they went on a 13-2 run in a span of 3:07 to go up 33-22 with 1:06 left in the first half. The Bearcats, however, were able to cut the deficit to 35-28 at the half when freshman guard Kaylee Krysztof sank a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to go. Binghamton then started the second half by going on an 8-0 run in the span of 5:01 to take a 43-41 lead.

In the fourth period, the Bearcats trailed 51-50 but went on an 11-3 run in a span of 3:11 to go up 59-54 with 5:13 left on the clock. Junior forward Genevieve Coleman and Weltz scored four points each during that stretch while Bowman had three points.

From there, the Bearcats shot 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line to lock up the win. Weltz had four points and Bowman had three points during that stretch.

"I was very proud of our team today," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "They are continuing to grow and get better. They are believing. We keep telling them that they are right there against everyone we've played so far. Today was a team effort because when one person wasn't hitting their shots, someone else was."

Coleman grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and scored nine points. Sophomore guard Meghan Casey came off the bench to chip in eight points.

Mili Carrera led UMass Lowell with 17 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Also scoring in double figures for the River Hawks were Leilani Rodriguez with 15 points and Rayne Durant with 12 points.

The performances by Bowman and Weltz mark the first time that a pair of Binghamton players have scored 20 points in the same game since Feb. 21, 2022 against Vermont. Bowman and Brina Benonysdottir each scored 22 points in that game.

Bowman now has 13 career games with at least 20 points while Weltz has two such performances. Coleman's previous career high of 10 rebounds came against NJIT on Jan. 11, 2023.

The Bearcats committed only 10 turnovers and held a 20-7 lead in points off of turnovers.

Binghamton hosts New Hampshire on Thursday for a 6:07 p.m. game.
