Men's basketball drops Maine in closing seconds 51-50

Torrence hits game-winning shot with 4.8 seconds left to give BU its first conference win

BANGOR, Maine – Graduate guard Symir Torrence hit a one-handed 12-foot floater with 4.8 seconds left to lift visiting Binghamton men's basketball (9-10, 1-5 America East) to a 51-50 win over Maine (10-11, 2-4 America East) Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.

The Bearcats led for 36+ minutes in the contest but trailed 50-49 after Maine sank a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining. Torrence, who ranks fifth in the nation in assists (7.2/game), kept it himself this time, drove the right side of the lane and swished the game-winner. Maine's last-ditch 3-point attempt was off the side of the rim at the buzzer.

"We wanted to give Symir some space to be a playmaker at the end," head coach Levell Sanders said of the winning play. "He made a tremendous shot. We talk about being a grind-it-out kind of team and 51-50 is that kind of game. We're battling and growing as a team. We've done some really good things in practice this last week and we have to keep it going. I'm happy we were able to pull it out today."

Graduate forward Armon Harried led three double-digit scorers with 15 points and also added eight rebounds. Senior forward Nehemiah Benson scored 12 points and classmate Tariq Balogun chipped in 11 points in a career-high 34 minutes.

Torrence sank a pair of important free throws with 1:28 left to give BU a 49-46 lead and wound up with six points, six rebounds and five assists. For the season, Torrence is the lone NCAA player averaging 9 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

Down nine at half, Maine used a 9-2 opening run to get back in the game and took its first lead since the game's first minute with 5:00 left, 43-42. But Torrence and Harried recorded back-to-back steals, Harried had a baseline dunk and BU nudged ahead, setting the stage for a tight final three minutes.

The Bearcats were ready out of the gate and opened with a 15-4 run in the first 7+ minutes as four different players hit the scoring column. Binghamton led by as many as 12 before settling on a nine-point cushion at the break, 28-19. The Bearcats held Maine to fewer field goals (6) than turnovers (7). Harried led the charge with eight points and six rebounds and Benson added eight points. It was the fewest points BU has allowed a D1 opponent in a half in three years (15 to UNH on 1/30/21).

The Bearcats play four of their next five at home, beginning with a Thursday night encounter with NJIT at the Events Center.
