Men’s Soccer Defeated 5-2 at Cornell

Big Red rallies with four goals in the final 20 minutes

ITHACA, N.Y. - Host Cornell (6-1-2) scored four times during the last 20 minutes of play to defeat Binghamton 2-1 (6-4-1) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at Berman Field. The Big Red entered the match ranked second in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Northeast Region Poll, a poll which also has the Bearcats ranked No. 10.

The Big Red attack was led by Alioune Ka, who finished with a game-high four points (one goal and two assists) - all of which came over the decisive final 20 minutes. Teammate Alex Harris added a goal and an assist.

Binghamton, meanwhile, hung tough against Cornell. The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead at the half and continued to hold that lead in the first 25 minutes of the second half.

Harris opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 17th minute but redshirt junior Gaven Egan deadlocked the match at 1-1 in the 26th minute. He took advantage of a throw-in by sophomore midfielder Marcus Nahim, which Cornell was unable to head out of the box. Egan then scored from 10 yards out for his second goal of the season.

In the 44th minute, freshman forward DT Megliola put the Bearcats up 2-1 with his first career goal. Senior back Luke Yates made a perfect strike from midfield. The ball bounced once just outside the box and Megliola shot it into the net.

After 25 minutes of scoreless action in the second half, however, Ka took over the game. He assisted on goals by Danny Lokko in the 71st minute and Connor Miller in the 78th minute. Ka then padded the lead to 4-2 in the 84th minute with an unassisted goal.

The Big Red then proceeded to put the game out of reach when Nate Hovan scored in the 86th minute.

Cornell finished the match with a 30-9 advantage in total shots and led 15-7 in shots on goal. The Bearcats were up 2-1 at the half despite being out shot 16-2 over the first 45 minutes. In the second half - despite the four goals - the Cornell advantage was reduced to 14-7.

"We played pretty well tonight for the first 70 minutes," head coach Paul Marco said. "We weathered the storm in the first half, made some adjustments and looked better in the second half. But we tired towards the end of the game and they scored their goals in transition and off of second balls. Give Cornell credit. They are well coached and have several special players."

Graduate student goalkeeper Dylan McDermott finished the game with a career-high 10 saves - the highest total recorded by a Bearcat player since Isaiah Pettis made 10 saves against West Virginia on Oct. 2, 2018.

Binghamton resumes conference play at NJIT on Saturday at 7 p.m.
