NEWARK, N.J. – Sokol Ymeraj finished with a goal and an assist as NJIT (4-5-2, 1-1-0 AE) held off Binghamton (6-5-1, 0-2-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. The match marked the second straight road contest for the Bearcats.
Ymaraj did all of his damage in opening 15 minutes of the second half. He assisted on Eric Sadlocha's goal in the 50
th minute which broke a scoreless tie. In the 65
th minute, the Highlanders were awarded a penalty kick and Ymaraj proceeded to pad the lead to 2-0.
Binghamton finally got on the scoreboard in the 73
rd minute, when sophomore midfielder
Alex Balkey netted his first career goal. He took a pass from sophomore forward Jamie Howell and shot the ball from the left side of the box.
From there, the Bearcats had the only shot over the remainder of the match but were unable to get the equalizer.
"We responded a little too late tonight," head coach
Paul Marco said. "With all of the injuries we have had, we need new guys to step up going forward and create a new identity. And we will."
NJIT out shot Binghamton 12-7 and held a 6-2 advantage in shot on goal. Graduate student goalkeeper
Dylan McDermott made four saves.
Binghamton returns home for a non-conference match against Bucknell on Tuesday at 6:07 p.m.
