Men’s Soccer Rallies for 2-1 win at UNH

Thomas nets game winner in 68th minute

DURHAM, N.H. – Redshirt sophomore forward Cailen Thomas scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute as Binghamton (7-5-2, 1-2-0 AE) came from behind to defeat New Hampshire (3-3-5, 1-1-1 AE) 2-1 in an America East men's soccer match on Saturday evening at Wildcat Stadium. The victory is the first for the Bearcats at New Hampshire since 2015 and lifts them back into the thick of the conference standings.

Thomas' goal, which was his second of the season, was set up by sophomore midfielder Marcus Nahim. Following a scramble for a loose ball to the left of the goal, Nahim got the ball to Thomas who one timed a shot into the net from close range. For Nahim, it was his team-best fifth assist of the season.

From there, the Bearcats limited New Hampshire to a pair of shots the rest of the match - both of which were saved by graduate student goalkeeper Dylan McDermott

"I am very proud of our team tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We got two terrific goals and our center backs - Luke Yates and Rio Onwumere - were outstanding. We limited their shots in front of the goal and a lot of our subs came on and played great minutes for us. New Hampshire is a very good team so this was a big win for us."

It was Yates who tied the match at 1-1 in the 29th minute. The Wildcats had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Michael Tsicoulias in the 25th minute - but just four minutes later, Yates came up with a loose ball in front of the goal and fired it into the net. It was Yates' career-best third goal of the season.

New Hampshire finished the match with a 17-8 lead in overall shots - but held just a 6-5 edge in shot on goal. McDemott finished the game with five saves.

Binghamton returns home to face UMass Lowell this coming Saturday at 6:07 p.m.

NOTES: Nahim's five assists currently ranks fifth in the America East.
