Men’s Soccer Holds Off UMass Lowell 1-0

Thomas scores in 30th minute as Bearcats win second straight AE match

VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt sophomore forward Cailen Thomas scored his second game-winning goal in a row, leading Binghamton (8-5-2, 2-2-0 AE) to a 1-0 win over UMass Lowell (6-3-4, 1-2-1 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victory is the second straight conference triumph for the Bearcats - who have now recorded their highest win total since the 2015 season.

It was a set piece in the 30th minute that decided the outcome of the match. After the River Hawks were whistled for a foul 10 yards outside the box, graduate student midfielder Tom Cohen took the free kick. The ball was delivered to the left side of the goal where Thomas headed it into the net for his third goal of the season.

From there, Binghamton was able to protect the lead over the remaining 60 minutes of the match. Graduate student Dylan McDermott made six saves to record his fourth solo shutout of the season. The Bearcat back line of seniors Charlie Kaldor and Luke Yates, junior Rio Onwumere and freshman Ryan Gillon were able to protect a one-goal lead for the second game in a row.

"What a terrific and exciting game," head coach Paul Marco said. "Both teams attacked very well and were good on set pieces. Our two center backs were outstanding tonight and we got a great set piece goal by Cailen off a terrific cross by Tom."

Total shots for the game were 12-6 UMass Lowell. The River Hawks also held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

With three matches left to go in the regular season, Binghamton is currently in a three-way tie in the America East conference with NJIT and Bryant. All three teams have six points and are 2-2-0 in conference play.

The Bearcats lost 2-1 at NJIT on Oct. 5 but head to Bryant next Sunday afternoon for a 4 p.m. match.

NOTES: The Bearcats finished the 2015 season 10-8-1.
