BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior
Hannah Mimas tallied a goal and two assists and Binghamton women's soccer (6-5-3, 3-2-1 America East) ran its unbeaten streak to four with a resounding 3-0 win over Vermont (8-5-3, 3-4 AE) Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field.
The Bearcats blanked the highest scoring team in the conference and continued their ascent in the standings. It was Binghamton's sixth-straight win over the Catamounts and with the win, the team moved into third place with two regular-season games remaining.
"That was a strong performance against a very good attack-minded Vermont side," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "The specifics of the game plan mattered but ultimately it's up to each player to follow what they need to do in their respective role and that effort added up today. It's quite difficult to get a shutout against a team with the attacking personalities that UVM has so we are pleased to do that. This was a strong response to Thursday (a 1-1 tie against NJIT) and we will celebrate today's win but also get some much-needed rest before playing UMass Lowell next Sunday on Senior Day."
The Bearcats spoiled Vermont's Senior Day festivities by continuing their penchant for scoring in bunches at Virtue Field. In their last visit in 2022, Binghamton scored six goals in 21 minutes en route to a 6-1 win. On Sunday, the Bearcats scored twice in a 4:02 span to take control early. In the ninth minute, Mimas sent a long thru ball past the Catamount back line. Freshman midfielder
Anna Buckwalter collected it, took a touch and deposited a 12-yard strike low to the far corner. It was Buckwalter's fourth goal of the season.
Just 4:02 later, Mimas did all the work for her team-high seventh goal of the season. She collected a long ball down the left side from junior center back
Brooke Herber and steamrolled past two Vermont defenders toward goal. She then tucked a close-range shot into the far corner for a 2-0 Bearcats' lead.
Binghamton closed the scoring early in the second half. Just 4:40 into the period, Mimas worked her way toward the left endline before ripping a hard shot that the UVM keeper deflected. But junior forward
Lauren Clark pounced in the rebound and sent it home from three yards for the final 3-0 margin. It was Clark's third goal of the season.
Senior keeper
Kaitlyn Williams made four saves for her first solo shutout of the season.
With the four-point game, Mimas moved into second among America East points leaders with 21 points. She leads the conference with seven assists and is tied for third with seven goals.
