BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore forward
Lauren Clark capped a furious closing rally with the game-winner with 24 seconds left to lift visiting Binghamton women's soccer (4-5-2, 1-2 America East) to a 4-3 win over host UMBCÂ (5-6-1, 1-1-1 AE) Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park.Â
Down 3-0 after the game's opening seven minutes, Binghamton stormed back in epic fashion with four straight goals to notch its first conference win of the season. With the Bing volleyball team cheering in the stands (they play at UMBC Friday night), the Bearcats scored three goals in the final 5:21 to continue their winning ways against UMBC. With the victory, Binghamton improved to 18-2-2 all-time against the Retrievers.Â
"I'm not really sure I have words for tonight," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "I give our team a lot of credit ... they had belief when were were down at halftime. Obviously we didn't expect to go down 0-3 in the first half and we have to come out with better intensity as UMBC gave us a lot to handle and we didn't cope well enough. But with some adjustments and then getting the ball forward in numbers we were able to get back into the game. I'm proud of how we battled and had the mentality to overcome the deficit. Hopefully this can be the start of a stretch where we can continue to get results and be back in the America East race. We will enjoy getting three points and the bye weekend and then prep next week for another America East match."Â
Freshman forward
Jahkaya Davis scored twice and the Bearcats pumped a season-high 23 shots toward goal, including 12 on goal to spark the rally. Davis began the comeback in the 32nd minute, collecting a long ball in the box, turning and drilling a left-footer into the top right netting from 12 yards.Â
The teams played the remainder of the first half and the first 39+ minutes of the second half scoreless and it looked like Binghamton wasn't going to be able to reverse its fortunes, despite a shots and possession cushion. But Davis struck again in the 85th minute to make it 3-2. Senior forward
Hannah Mimas collected a loose ball inside the box on the left and fed Davis, who turned and fired a bullet to the far post for her second of the game and fourth of the season.
With time winding down, Binghamton earned a corner kick and junior back
Brooke Herber sent it into a dangerous spot in the goal mouth. Senior striker
Mackenzie Ryder headed it down toward goal and it deflected in off a Retrievers defender for a 3-3 tie. Then in the furious closing 30 seconds, Herber took another corner kick and it was cleared out of the box. But fellow backliner
Allison Falvo drove a hard ball toward goal from 24 yards and Clark did the rest. With her back to the goal, Clark heeled the oncoming ball through her legs on a redirect into the lower right corner, setting off a big Bearcats celebration.Â
Binghamton has 10 days off before hosting Bryant one week from Sunday.Â
