Women’s Basketball Wins 68-58 at Canisius

Bearcats shoot season-best 51 percent, win second straight game

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Visiting Binghamton (4-3) shot a season-high 51 percent from the field (27-of-53), sparking its 68-58 win over Canisius (1-5) on Monday morning at the Koessler Athletic Center. The victory marks the second straight triumph for the Bearcats.

Ten different Binghamton players reached the scoring column against the Golden Griffs, led by sophomore guards Leah Middleton and Yanniah Boyd - each of whom finished with 12 points. Both of them also dished out three of the Bearcats' season-high 17 assists.

Junior forward Camryn Fauria added nine points and six rebounds while redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz turned in seven points, five assists and three steals. Fellow junior guard Kaia Goode, meanwhile, finished with six points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Bearcats used an early 9-0 run during a stretch of 2:29 to go up 11-5 with 2:20 left in the opening period. Middleton punctuated the blitz with a three-point field goal, forcing Canisius to call a timeout.

Nursing a 27-23 lead, Binghamton closed out the first half with five straight points over the final 1:51 to take a nine-point lead into the break. Junior guard Meghan Casey drained a three-point field goal and Goode hit a pair of free throws during that span.

In the third period, the Bearcats used an 8-0 run over a stretch of two minutes to go up 45-29 with 4:46 left to go. Boyd had five of her points during that stretch.

From there, the Bearcats maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

"When we move the ball and share the ball, we can be really good," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We've kept telling our team to keep moving around and find the hot hand shooting. It was good to come out of here with a win."

Jaela Johnson of Canisius scored a game-high 19 points while Shariah Gailes added 12 points.

Off the bench, sophomore guard Kendall Bennett chipped in five points, four rebounds, an assist and a pair of steals while sophomore guard Bella Pucci also finished with five points. Three other Bearcat players - including Casey - scored four points.
