Women’s Basketball Defeats Loyola (Md.) 62-46

Bearcats win third straight game, improve to 5-3

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (5-3) rode a strong defensive effort to a 62-46 win over Loyola (Md.) (4-3) in a non-conference basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory marks the third straight triumph for the Bearcats.

Sophomore guard Yanniah Boyd and redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points each. Boyd also added a team-best five assists and pulled down four rebounds while Weltz canned three of her shots from beyond the three-point arc.

Junior forward Camryn Fauria finished with nine points and seven rebounds while sophomore forward Kendall Bennett and freshman center Abby Misier each added eight points. Bennett also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

It was defense, however, that was the story in Binghamton's win. The Bearcats outrebounded the Greyhounds 36-28 and held them to just 33 percent shooting from the field (16-of-49).

"I am really proud of our team," head coach Mary Grimes said. "That is a tough Loyola team and for us to come out with a win against them is pretty impressive. Our team is figuring out how to play off each other and trust each other."

Binghamton broke a 4-4 deadlock by going on a 10-3 run over a stretch of 4:12 in the first period to go up 14-7. Four different Bearcat players scored during that span as the Bearcat took a lead they would never relinquish.

The Greyhounds got to within 32-27 at the 5:46 mark of the third period but the Bearcats responded with eight straight points over the ensuing 2:39 to go up 40-27. Weltz drained a three-point shot and Boyd converted a three-point play during that stretch.

Binghamton held the Greyhounds scoreless over the first 3:39 of the fourth period. By that time, the Bearcats' lead was up to 46-30. From there, Binghamton maintained at least a 13-point lead the rest of the way.

Koi Sims of Loyola finished with game highs in both scoring (12) and rebounding (12).

Binghamton finished with a 15-6 advantage in second-chance points as well as a 24-20 edge in bench points. From beyond the arc, the Bearcats shot 7-for-19.

"We have really been stressing getting defensive rebounds and second-chance opportunities," Grimes said. "So we are pretty excited about how we did today in both areas."

Freshman center Abby Misier came off the bench to score eight points while sophomore guard Bella Pucci added seven points. Junior guard Kaia Goode, meanwhile, recorded a team-high three steals to go along with five points and three assists.

From the free throw line, the Bearcats made 15 of their 20 attempts (.750).

Binghamton heads to Buffalo for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday.
