Women’s Basketball Defeated 74-51 at Buffalo

Pucci finishes with 10 points and eight rebounds, Boyd adds 10 points

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Chellia Watson poured in a game-high 26 points, powering unbeaten Buffalo (8-0) to a 74-51 victory over Binghamton (5-4) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at Alumni Arena. The loss snapped the Bearcats' season-high, three-game winning streak.

Watson, who entered the game ranked No. 36 in the nation with 19.1 points per game, shot 11-for-19 from the field and canned all three of her free throw attempts. She also dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds.

The Bulls as a team entered the game against Binghamton ranked nationally in both scoring offense and defense. Buffalo was ranked No. 21 with 53.4 points allowed per game and No. 42 with 79.7 points scored per game.

Sophomore guards Yanniah Boyd and Bella Pucci each scored a team-best 10 points. Pucci also grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Boyd dished out three assists and grabbed four rebounds. Boyd has now tied for the team lead in scoring in each of the past three games.

Watson, meanwhile, scored 12 of her points in the first period as the Bulls built a 20-6 lead through 10 minutes of play. The Bearcats, however, regrouped with a solid second period. They outscored Buffalo 15-13 during that stretch to trim the deficit to 33-21 at the half.

The Bearcats clawed to within 35-25 on a layup by Pucci with 8:47 left in the third period. Buffalo, however, went on to score 26 points during the period to stretch its lead to 59-40.

Buffalo's defense then took over in the final period, holding Binghamton to just three points during the first 7:09 of play. By that time, the Bulls extended their lead to 68-43 and they kept their lead at over 20 points the rest of the game.

"We had to defend one of the best players in the country tonight," head coach Mary Grimes said. "But this was a good experience to get us ready for some of the top players in the America East that we will face. We needed to keep playing for 40 minutes tonight. Buffalo went on some runs and we needed to keep our emotions in check during those times."

Junior guard Kaia Goode finished with nine points, five assists and four steals. She entered the game leading the America East with 2.8 steals per game.

Redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz also recorded four steals to go along with seven points and three rebounds. Fellow junior guard Meghan Casey came off the bench to add five points, three assists and three steals.

Alexis Davis turned in a double-double for the Bulls with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Terah Harness chipped in 12 points.

Buffalo shot 51.7 percent for the game (31-of-58) and dished out 24 assists as a team. The Bulls also held a 52-34 advantage in points in the paint.

Binghamton returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 15 at Siena. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
