Women’s Basketball Wins 64-62 at Siena

Boyd scores career-best 20 points as Bearcats improve to 6-4

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Yanniah Boyd scored a career-high 20 points, powering Binghamton (6-4) to a 64-62 victory at Siena (3-5) in a non-conference basketball game on Sunday afternoon at HNY Arena. The win marked a successful homecoming for first-year head coach Mary Grimes, who graduated from Siena in 2003.

Boyd's 20 points are the most scored by a Binghamton player this season. She was 6-of-9 from the field, canned her lone three-point field goal shot and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. In addition, Boyd tied for the team lead with six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Also reaching double figures in scoring were fellow sophomore guard Bella Pucci and redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz. Pucci tied her career high with 15 points and also recorded five rebounds, an assist and three steals. Weltz, meanwhile, added 13 points, a game-high five assists and a team-best five steals.

Boyd scored 14 of her points in the first half as the Bearcats raced out to a 36-27 lead at the break. Binghamton shot 50 percent from both the field (12-of-24) and three-point range (5-for-10) during that stretch.

The Binghamton lead stretched to 45-33 with 6:19 left in the third period. From there, however, the Saints outscored the Bearcats 17-6 to trim the deficit to 51-50 heading into the final period. In the third period alone, Siena shot 54 percent from the field (6-of-11) and made 10 out of their 11 free throw attempts.

Nursing a 58-55 lead with 4:19 remaining, Binghamton scored five straight crucial points to take an eight point lead with 3:49 left to go. Pucci recorded a steal and a three point play and one possession later, Weltz converted a layup.

The Saints, however, refused to go quietly. They pulled to within 63-62 on a three-point field goal by Aniya Hooker with six seconds left. Weltz was fouled on the ensuing possession and made the second of two free throws. Siena was then unable to get off another shot before time expired.

"We got some key defensive stops late in the game," Grimes said. "Give Siena a lot of credit for getting back in the game but we kept fighting and at crunch time, we were able to get some steals when we needed to."

Ahniysha Jackson led Siena with 18 points and tied Weltz for the game-high with five steals. Teresa Seppala added 13 points while Zyriah Price finished with 10 points.

Junior forward Camryn Fauria had eight points and five rebounds while sophomore forward Kendall Bennett tied Boyd for the team lead with six rebounds.

Binghamton returns home to host ACC member Syracuse on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
