Women’s Basketball Defeats Pitt-Johnstown 79-34 in Season Opener

Weltz scores game-high 17 points, Goode adds 10 points

VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz scored a game-high 17 points and junior guard Kaia Goode added 10 points, leading Binghamton (1-0) to a 79-34 win over Pitt-Johnstown (0-0) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory marked the Bearcats' first game under head coach Mary Grimes, who was hired back in April.

Weltz and Goode paced a Bearcat attack that shot 44 percent from the field (27-of-61) and canned eight three-point field goals. Binghamton also limited the Mountain Cats to just 23 percent shooting (12-of-51) and caused 24 turnovers.

"It was a good game," Grimes said. "We had everything covered tonight. The past two weeks, the players have been on edge to play someone different and it showed tonight that they were excited to be in the arena."

Weltz went 6-of-8 from the field, nailed all three of her three-point shots as well as both of her free throws. She also tied for the game high with eight rebounds, dished out three assists and led all players with four steals.

Goode, who played for Grimes at Le Moyne the previous two seasons before transferring to Binghamton this summer, also recorded a game-high five assists and grabbed five rebounds.

The Bearcats set the tone for the game early, scoring the first 13 points during the opening 4:16 of play. Up 14-6 after one period, Binghamton broke the game open to go up 36-17 at the half.

Binghamton's defense took over in the second half, limiting the Mountain Cats to just 17 points. On the offensive end, the Bearcats shot 57.5 percent (16-of-28) over the final 20 minutes.

Finishing with nine points and a game-high three blocks for the Bearcats was freshman center Abby Misier. Sophomore guards Yanniah Boyd, Leah Middleton and Bella Pucci - as well as senior forward Genevieve Coleman - all chipped in eight points.

Lexi Margolis led Pitt-Johnstown with 12 points.

Binghamton scored 31 of its points off of turnovers and had 34 points off the bench.

The Bearcats host Akron Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

NOTE: Since Pitt-Johnstown competes at the NCAA Division II level, the result did not count towards their record.
