Women’s Basketball Pulls Away from Akron 66-50

Weltz nets game-high 18 points, Pucci grabs career-best 13 rebounds

VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz scored a game-best 18 points and sophomore guard Bella Pucci finished with a career-high 13 rebounds, powering Binghamton (2-0) to a 66-50 win over Akron (1-1) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats are off to a 2-0 start for the fourth time in the last six seasons.

Weltz, who is now averaging 17.5 points so far this season, went 7-of-15 from the field and hit three of her shots from beyond the three-point arc. Pucci's rebound total, meanwhile, is the most by a Binghamton player since Clare Traeger finished with 18 rebounds against Vermont on Feb. 9, 2022.

Also reaching double figures in scoring against Akron were sophomore forward Yanniah Boyd, who had a career-high 14 points, and junior guard Kaia Goode, who finished with 10 points for the second game in a row.

With the score tied at 32-32 with 8:08 left in the third period, Goode scored seven straight points in a span of 2:46. Over the ensuing seven minutes of play, the Bearcats' lead fluctuated between five and seven points.

Binghamton finally got the separation it needed with a 7-0 run in a span of 1:39 to go up 54-40 with 7:05 left in regulation. Weltz scored back-to-back baskets and Goode punctuated the run with a three pointer during that stretch.

In the fourth period alone, the Bearcats outscored Akron 21-12. They shot 47 percent from the field (7-of-15) and shot 50 percent from three-point range.

"Our defense was the key in the fourth period," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We called a couple of timeouts and we talked about limiting Akron to one shot or no shots. They (usually) score a lot of points -which we talked about all week - but we rebounded like beasts today and are really happy with the win."

For the visiting Zips, Shelbee Brown turned in a 14-point, 14-rebound, two-assist, three-steal performance. Maddie Vejsicky added 13 points while Teniesha Clarke chipped in 12 points.

Junior forward Camryn Fauria had eight points and six rebounds for the Bearcats. Off the bench, sophomore forward Kendall Bennett had five points, six rebounds and a game-high two blocks.

Binghamton shot 42 percent for the game (24-of-58) and was 7-of-21 from three-point range (33.3 percent). In addition, the Bearcats finished with a 44-29 rebounding advantage as well as a 15-8 edge in second-chance points.

The Bearcats travel to St. Bonaventure on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
