VESTAL, N.Y. - Graduate forward
Ben Callahan-Gold scored a game-high 21 points and Binghamton men's basketball (1-1) evened its record with an 82-63 win over SUNY Oneonta in the team's home opener Thursday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Bearcats led by 22 at half and extended it to as many as 41 points midway through the second half before the Division III Red Dragons tightened the score in the closing minutes.
"I thought we came out with the right mindset," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "We executed pretty well and for the most part, played together offensively and defensively. We let them score way too many points in the second half (43) ... so we still have some work to do. We have two really good opponents up next (Miami, Fordham) who will test our togetherness. I'm looking forward to it."
Binghamton held Oneonta to eight first-half field goals and built a 42-20 cushion. The Bearcats then opened the second half with a 30-11 surge to open up a 72-31 lead with 9:39 left. After Binghamton dipped into its bench, Oneonta outscored them 32-10 to end the game.
Callahan-Gold shot 8-of-15, including 4-of-10 from 3-point range. Senior forward
Nehemiah Benson tallied 18 points (6-of-10), six boards and three steals. Graduate guard
Tymu Chenery had 10 points and seven boards in 19 tidy minutes and sophomore forward
Gavin Walsh added nine points and seven boards in 22 minutes.
The Bearcats board a flight Saturday morning for Miami ahead of their Sunday afternoon tilt with the ACC member Hurricanes in Coral Gables.
