Volleyball Cruises Past UMBC, 3-0

Bearcats record first win over Retrievers at home since 2017

VESTAL, N.Y. (binghamtonbearcats.com) - Binghamton Volleyball (16-9, 6-2) cruised past UMBC (7-14, 5-3), 3-0, inside the Events Center Friday night. The victory extends the Bearcats win streak to four in America East play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bearcats and Retrievers traded scores early before Binghamton recorded four consecutive points to lead 15-8 in the first set. UMBC then put up their own 7-1 run to come within one, 17-16. The home team registered four of the next seven points to gain a 21-19 edge. The Bearcats finished out the Retrievers with four straight scores to win the first set 25-19. 

Binghamton continued its momentum, notching a match-high .316 attack percentage in a second frame that featured eight ties and three lead changes. UMBC chipped away at the Bearcat defense to own a 13-10 advantage until Binghamton used a 5-0 run to go up 15-13. The Bearcats tacked on nine scores to the Retrievers' six to force a set point, 24-19. UMBC saved three set points before an Ella Schabort kill ended the set 25-22 for Binghamton. 

The Bearcats gained a 6-2 edge in the final set until the Retrievers posted a 6-0 run to lead 9-7. UMBC added onto its advantage 17-12 before Binghamton grabbed six consecutive points to make it 18-17 in the home team's favor. The Bearcats held onto their lead for the remainder of the stanza, rallying to record seven of the next 12 points and win the set, 25-22. 

MATCH NOTES 
  • The win marks Binghamton's first against UMBC since Oct. 30, 2022 and first at home since Nov. 5, 2017. 
  • The Bearcats out-blocked the Retrievers 10-8 in the victory, the team's tenth match in double-digits at net this season. 
  • Lottie Scully led Binghamton with 40 assists and a season-high 18 digs against UMBC for her fifth double-double of the fall. Her 40 helpers are the most by any America East setter in a three-set match this season. 
  • Tsvetelina Ilieva recorded 19 kills at a .457 clip for team-high 21 total points over the Retrievers, her fifth match this season hitting .400 or better with double-digit kills. 
  • Middle blockers Johanna Remy and Misa Dlouha combined for 10 blocks, 19 points and nine kills at .492 in the win. 
  • Viktoria Dimitrova chipped in 12 kills from the right side, the freshman's fifth double-digit performance of the fall.  
UP NEXT 
The Bearcats host their final regular season home match against New Hampshire this Sunday, Nov. 10. Binghamton will honor seniors Sydney Aguirre and Tsvetelina Ilieva after the contest. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. inside the Events Center.
