Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Men's basketball beats Mercyhurst at buzzer 62-60

Walker scores winning basket with 0.6 left off feed from Peterson

VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior guard Chris Walker converted a low-post feed from classmate Wes Peterson, Jr. with 0.6 left to give Binghamton men's basketball (7-6) a 62-60 win over visiting Mercyhurst (6-8) Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The triumph extended Binghamton's win streak to five, longest in seven years.

In a see-saw game that featured 14 ties and 10 lead changes, the Bearcats had a potential go-ahead basket blocked out of bounds with 2.1 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds, Walker found a late-breaking Peterson on a curl to the basket. Peterson quickly returned the ball to Walker on the left side of the rim and his lay-in just beat the buzzer. A last-ditch Mercyhurst inbounds was intercepted by Walker at midcourt.

Walker hit 6-of-10, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range and scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half as the Bearcats finally shook off a spirited Mercyhurst performance. Walker added five assists and three steals.

"It was another one of those games down to the wire," head coach Levell Sanders said. "We've played a ton of these games this year, which gives us some familiarity when we are in this position. We were able to execute ... it wasn't exactly how we drew it up but we were patient enough to find the open man and I thought Wes made a really good basketball play to find Chris under the basket. I don't think we played great but I'm happy we won."

Graduate guard Tymu Chenery led all scorers with 19 points and added three blocks and two steals. Chenery snapped a 51-51 tie with four straight points in a 17-second span to give the Bearcats a 55-51 lead with 1:59 left. Walker hit a 3-pointer with 1:15 remaining to restore a four-point Bing edge, 58-54. Then with 45 seconds left, Walker made two free throws to lift the margin to six, 60-54. But a pair of Bearcat free throw misses and a turnover inside 30 seconds left opened the door for the Lakers to forge the final tie, setting the stage for Walker's game-winner.

Senior forward Nehemiah Benson hit 5-of-6 shots for 12 points.

Binghamton shot 54% in the second half and put 38 points on the board after a sluggish 24-point first half.

The Bearcats next travel to West Point to face Army Sunday afternoon.
