POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Host Marist (9-2) opened the second half with a deciding 26-9 run to pull away from Binghamton men's basketball (8-7) 69-51 Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. The loss snapped the Bearcats' six-game win streak and closed the team's non-conference slate.
Binghamton led by four at half but misfired on 9-of-10 to start the second half, opening the door for the Red Foxes' rally. Marist shot 63% in the second half and limited the Bearcats to its season-low scoring output.
"We didn't play team basketball today," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "We didn't do the things we were supposed to do offensively … especially in the second half when we weren't able to execute. Marist makes you take outside shots and we forced too many today. We have to put this behind us, regroup and be ready for UMBC in the conference opener."
Graduate forward
Ben Callahan-Gold tallied 10 points and three teammates added nine points apiece. Graduate guard
Tymu Chenery hit three 3-pointers for his nine points – all in the first half. Sophomore forward
Gavin Walsh produced nine points and 11 rebounds. Walsh, who leads the America East in rebounding, reached double figures in boards for the eighth time this season. Senior forward
Nehemiah Benson also chipped in nine points.
It was a physical, defensive first half that saw both teams manage just nine field goals. The Bearcats trailed 8-5 before using a 17-9 run over eight minutes to pull ahead 22-17. Chenery hit back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the run and closed the half with nine points. Callahan-Gold added eight points in 10 minutes of work and Binghamton led 27-23 at intermission.
Binghamton opens its 16-game America East slate Saturday afternoon when the Bearcats host UMBC.
