DELAND, Fla. – Sophomore pitcher
Brianna Roberts homered and got the victory in the first game while sophomore pinch hitter
Emma Lawson drilled the go-ahead, two-run triple in the nightcap, highlighting Binghamton's sweep in the second day of the Frank Griffin Classic on Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field. The Bearcats (3-1) beat SIUE (1-2) 7-3 in the opener before rallying from a three-run deficit to beat host Stetson (0-3) in the second game.
Roberts finished the day with a team-best .750 batting average, going 3-for-4 with her home run and team-high three RBI. Her two-run home run in the top of the second inning against SIUE gave the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. From there, Binghamton tacked on five unearned runs over the next three innings – all of which came off of Cougar fielding errors.
Roberts exited the game after the fifth inning, having given up three runs (two earned) and striking out six batters. In the process, she evened her record at 1-1. Redshirt junior
Lindsey Walter took over from there, tossing a pair of shutout innings to nail down her first save of the season.
The loss was tagged to Sydney Baalman, who is now 0-2.
Against Stetson, junior outfielder
Sarah Rende's sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning gave the Bearcats a quick 1-0 lead. Rende finished the day 3-for-7 (.429).
In the bottom of the second inning, the host Hatters reeled off four runs to go up 4-1. Briana Robinson highlighted the frame with a two-run double and a run scored.
Binghamton regrouped to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning. Roberts and senior left fielder
Allison L'Amoreaux each had an RBI double and junior pinch runner
Laney Harbaugh scored on a fielding error.
That set the stage for Lawson's heroics in the top of the seventh inning. She entered the game as a pinch hitter and drilled a two-run triple, putting the Bearcats ahead for good. Lawson later scored on an RBI ground out by senior catcher
Hailey Ehlers, padding the lead to 7-4.
Sophomore pitcher
Olivia Kennedy threw the final 4.0 innings, allowing only three hits and an unearned run. Her record is now 1-0. Caitlin Mullin took the loss, dropping her record to 0-1.
Through four games, Rende and L'Amoreaux are tied for the Binghamton team lead with a .385 batting average. L'Amoreaux also has a team-high four RBI.
Binghamton concludes its stay at the Frank Griffin Classic on Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. rematch against SIUE.
