DELAND, Fla. – Sophomore pinch hitter
Emma Lawson delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting Binghamton (4-1) to a 2-1 walk-off victory over SIUE (1-4) on Sunday morning in the final day of the Frank Griffin Classic at Patricia Wilson Field. With the win, the Bearcats are off to their best start since going 4-0-1 to begin the 2004 season.
Lawson was the hero for the second game in a row. On Saturday against host Stetson, she clubbed a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning, which broke up a 4-4 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit.
Against the Cougars on Sunday, Lawson struck again. The Bearcats were trailing 1-0 but loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lawson was once again called in as a pinch hitter and she singled through the right side, scoring both the tying and winning runs.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Binghamton got an impressive pitching performance by senior
Allison L'Amoreaux. She went the full seven innings, scattering one run on six hits and striking out six batters. L'Amoreaux won her second decision of the weekend and is now 2-0 so far this season.
Rylie Pindel, who came on in relief to star the bottom of the seventh inning, was tagged with the loss. Her record is now 1-1.
L'Amoreaux also finished the weekend with a .313 batting average. She was 5-for-16 with three doubles, a home run and three RBI.
Redshirt junior
Lindsey Walter and junior outfielder
Sarah Rende both batted a team-best .333 during the Frank Griffin Classic. Against SIUE on Sunday, Walter went 2-for-3 at the plate.
In two of its four wins this weekend, Binghamton came from behind to win. In addition, the Bearcats won a pair of games in their final at-bat.
Up next for Binghamton is the Winthrop Eagle Classic this coming Friday-Sunday.
NOTES: Lawson now has four career games with two RBI.
