Women’s Basketball Edged 55-51 at Bryant

Weltz finishes with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Host Bryant (12-12, 5-6 AE) outscored Binghamton (9-15, 4-7 AE) 20-8 in the fourth period on its way to a 55-51 victory in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center. The game marked the second of three straight road contests for the Bearcats.

The defeat overshadowed an impressive performance by redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz. She tied for the game high with 15 points, going 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 at the line. Weltz also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists, recorded four steals and blocked a shot.

For the victorious Bulldogs, Mariona Planes Fortuny also scored a game-high 15 points and added six rebounds. Nia Scott added 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while Mia Mancini chipped in 10 points.

Binghamton appeared to be in control of the game when it took a 41-31 lead with 2:08 left in the third period. Sophomore forward Camryn Fauria gave the Bearcats their double-figure lead, prompting Bryant  to call a time out.

The Bearcats went the first 4:26 of the fourth period without scoring a point. By that time, Bryant had cut the lead to 43-41.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good when Silvia Gonzalez canned back-to-back three-point field goals, as they took a 50-45 lead. Bryant then reeled off the next five points to go up 55-45 with 22 seconds left to go.

"Our shots weren't falling in the fourth period," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "I didn't think they were bad shots. I just think that we were not knocking down shots and getting the rebounds. We can't just shoot and run down to the other end. We have to follow our shots."

Junior forward Genevieve Coleman had nine points while graduate student Denai Bowman finished with seven points, a team-high nine rebounds and three assists. Freshman forward Kendall Bennett, meanwhile, had five points, seven rebounds and a game-high two blocks.

Bryant held a 46-34 advantage in rebounds and was 17-of-24 from the free throw line (70.8 percent). The Bearcats, by contrast, went to the line only nine times and made six of their shots (66.7 percent).

Binghamton finished the game with just nine turnovers.

Binghamton heads to UMBC on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.
