Bearcats take part in final competitions before AE Championships

BOSTON, MASS./STATEN ISLAND, N.Y./ NEW YORK, N.Y. – It was busy weekend for the Binghamton track & field teams, which sent athletes to three different meets on the East Coast. None of the meets featured team scoring.

No two Binghamton track & field athletes were busier this weekend than redshirt freshman Brian Luciano and junior Jaston Ormsby. On Friday afternoon, the Bearcat throwers took part in the prestigious Millrose Games, which was held at the New York City Armory. Luciano placed third overall in the weight throw invitational section (65-9 3/4) and Ormsby was fifth (60-4 ½).

The following day, Luciano and Ormsby placed first and second respectively in the same event at the Big Apple Invitational, which was held at Ocean Breeze. Luciano's winning throw was 63-2 while Ormsby's distance was 61-2.

Other first-place finishers at the Big Apple Invitational included senior Jenna Chan in the women's 60 hurdles (8.48), junior Lucciana Robertson in the women's high jump (5-6 1/4) and junior Zoe Rose in the women's mile (5:07.47).

Meanwhile, other members of the Bearcats were at the Valentine's Invitational at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center – a meet that was held Friday-Saturday. The meet is one of the largest indoor meets in the nation, with several professional runners entered as well as NCAA programs from all over the nation.

Graduate student Sophia Ryan clocked a mile time of 4:49.56. She was 84th out of 318 finishers – but her performance ranks second all-time in Binghamton program history.

Freshman Vicky Mordvinova broke the Binghamton freshman record in the 1,000 with a time of 2:58.57. The previous mark of 2:58.87 was set by Kim Law back in 2008.

The Bearcat women's 4x400 relay team placed eighth overall out of 42 squads with a time of 3:50.21. That Binghamton quartet consisted of sophomore Angie Mesa-Espinosa, senior Sophia Morone, freshman Kaya Duran and junior Hillary Abankwa.

On the men's side at Boston, senior Josh Stone won his heat of the 5,000 and in the process – clocked the second-fastest time in Binghamton program history (13:55.84). He was 60th overall out of 125 finishers.

The Binghamton men's 4x400 relay was seventh out of 43 teams with a time of 3:13.72. That Bearcat quartet consisted of senior Marcus Johnson, sophomore Samson Joseph, senior Oliver Madariaga and junior Joey Cardascia. Their time ranks eighth all time in Binghamton program history.

Up next for Binghamton is the America East Indoor Championships, which will be held at The Track at New Balance Feb. 19-20.
