Women’s Basketball Defeats UMass Lowell 79-48

Bowman nets game-high 21 points, Wanzer adds 20 points

VESTAL, N.Y. —  Graduate student guard Denai Bowman and redshirt sophomore guard Ella Wanzer scored 21 and 20 points respectively, leading Binghamton (12-15, 7-7 AE) to a 79-48 victory over UMass Lowell (4-21, 4-9 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Thursday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest marked the third straight win for the Bearcats.

The 79 points represents the Bearcats' highest offensive total of the season. It came during the Bearcats annual Play4Kay game, in which head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord pledged five dollars per point to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Bowman went 9-for-13 from the field and made all three of her free throws. She now has 1,466 career points and now is only 15 points away from tying Kai Moon (2016-20) for fifth place all-time in Binghamton program history with 1,476 points.

Wanzer, meanwhile, made five three-point field goals, two field goals within the arc and sank her lone free throw. She also grabbed five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Camryn Fauria and redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Welz led the Bearcats in rebounds, grabbing seven each. Weltz also dished out a game-high five assists, recorded a game-high four steals and chipped in nine points.

Binghamton started the game with a 19-2 in a span of 4:45. Wanzer scored 12 of her points during that stretch.

UMass Lowell's largest run came in the second period, going 10-0 in a span of 3:23 bringing the score to 35-25. The Bearcats, however, responded by scoring 25 points in the third period to go up 61-36.

In the fourth period, Binghamton never led by less than 22 points.

"We talked at the half about sharing the basketball, making the extra pass and getting the rebounds and we did those things in the second half," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Ella and Denai both played great tonight."

Abbey Lindsey led the River Hawks with 19 points. Leilani Rodriguez grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while Maddie Rice had nine rebounds and seven points.

As a team, Binghamton recorded 13 steals and forced 24 turnovers on the defensive end of the court. The Bearcats held a 34-13 lead in points off of turnovers and a 34-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Binghamton travels to Maine next Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.
