Baseball rallies past UNCG for second straight day, 9-6

Gunning belts two home runs, drives in five; BU digs out of 4-0 deficit with eight straight runs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Binghamton baseball (2-3) dug out of an early hole for the second straight day and rattled off eight straight runs to throttle UNC Greensboro (4-2) 9-6 Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Senior right fielder Mike Gunning belted two home runs and drove in five, and BU collected 12 hits for the second straight day.

Down 4-0, the Bearcats scored three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and took the lead with four runs in the fifth. After the Spartans got two back in the sixth, BU closed out the scoring with a tack-on run in the seventh.

In addition to Gunning, senior center fielder Tommy Reifler had three hits and an RBI, junior catcher Evin Sullivan drove in two runs, senior first baseman Andrew Tan had two hits and freshman second baseman Jake Dally made his first collegiate hit memorable with a solo home run.

On the mound, sophomore starter Ryan Bates scattered four hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings. Graduate Theo Farynick tossed two hitless innings and struck out three. Freshman Jackson Mitchell earned his first collegiate save with a 1-2-3 ninth, ending the game with a strikeout. Farynick worked out of a jam in the seventh when the tying run came to the plate with two on. But a pop-up to center field ended the threat. Earlier in the inning, Gunning provided a defensive gem with a sliding catch with a runner on base.

At the plate, Gunning produced a home run for the second straight day when he delivered a two-run shot in the third. Reifler led off the frame with a double and scored three batters later when Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly. Gunning then followed with his shot over the left field wall to make it 4-3 UNCG.

In the fourth, BU tied it when Dally launched a two-out solo shot to center.

The Bearcats took command in the fifth with four runs. Sullivan deposited an RBI single to left center to give BU a 5-4 lead and Gunning greeted the Spartans' reliever by sending a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left for a three-run shot and 8-4 cushion.

After UNCG cut its deficit in half with a two-run home run in the sixth, BU closed out the scoring with a Reifler RBI single in the seventh.

The teams close out their weekend series with a noon start on Sunday. Senior Nelson Berkwich (0-1, 4.50 ERA) starts for the Bearcats.
