BURLINGTON, Vt. – Unbeaten conference leader Vermont (18-5, 8-0 America East) used a late 18-8 run to move past Binghamton men's basketball (10-11, 2-6 AE) 62-49 Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gym. The loss snapped BU's two-game win streak and extended Vermont's NCAA best conference unbeaten streak to 23.
The Bearcats were within one, 34-33, with 11:09 left before the Catamounts strung together the decisive run, which spanned 5:30. Binghamton shot above 50 percent for most of the second half but Vermont countered with five 3-pointers and enough trips to the line to keep its home court advantage intact.
Binghamton held Vermont 12 points under its conference scoring average and played one of its best games at Patrick Gym in recent years. The game featured seven ties and nine lead changes.
Senior guard
Tymu Chenery scored all 12 of his points in the second half and added five rebounds and two blocks for the game. Graduate forward
Armon Harried tallied 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Graduate guard
Dan Petcash added 10 points and five boards. Graduate point guard
Symir Torrence handed out nine assists. Torrence ranks fifth in the nation in assists (7.2/game).
Chenery had a three-point play 1:35 into the second half that gave BU a 27-25 lead. The Bearcats hit 5-of-9 shots to start the second half before Vermont countered.
The Bearcats came out with a strong first half defensively, holding UVM to 36 percent shooting. Petcash soared for a putback at the halftime buzzer to draw BU within two, 22-20. He had a game-high eight points in the half and sophomore forward
Chris Walker added a pair of 3s and six points.
Binghamton plays the next three games at home, beginning with a Thursday night tilt against longtime SUNY rival UAlbany.
