Women’s Basketball Defeats First-Place Vermont 66-57

Bowman nets 18 points, Fauria adds 16 points

VESTAL, N.Y. — Graduate student guard Denai Bowman scored 18 points while sophomore guard Camryn Fauria added 16 points, powering Binghamton (9-13, 4-5 AE) to a 66-57 win over first-place and defending champion Vermont (15-8, 7-2 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory marked the Bearcats' fourth triumph in their last five games.

Bowman went 6-for-13 from the field and made six out of seven free throws. She also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists. In the past six games, Bowman has averaged 14.4 points. She now has 1,409 points for her career. Against the Catamounts, Bowman became the sixth player in Binghamton program history to eclipse the 1,400-point mark for her career.

Fauria's 16 points tied her career-high. She went 5-for-6 from the field and was 2-for-3 from three-point range. In addition, Fauria made all four of her free throw attempts.

Redshirt sophomore guards Jadyn Weltz and Ella Wanzer also reached double figures in scoring - with 12 and 10 points respectively. Weltz also grabbed six rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists.

Vermont appeared to be in control of the game, as they built a 35-24 lead with 4:53 left in the third period. Binghamton, however, rallied back with a 13-2 run in a span of 3:33 to tie the game at 37-37 with 1:20 left in the period. Fauria led the Bearcats by scoring eight of her points during this stretch.

From there, there were six more ties until Binghamton took control of the game in the final period. The Bearcats scored 27 points during the fourth period, shooting 6-of-9 from the field and going 13-of-14 from the free throw line during that stretch.

With the score tied at 54-54, Binghamton took the lead for good with five straight points. Weltz canned a pair of free throws with 3:23 left to go and following a Vermont turnover, Wanzer drained a three-point field goal with 2:59 remaining.

Anna Olson, who led Vermont with 17 points, brought the Catamounts to within 59-57 when she converted a three-point play at the 1:58 mark of the game. That would be, however, Vermont's final points of the game as the Bearcat defense forced a pair of turnovers on the next two possessions and got two additional stops.

Binghamton iced the game at the free throw line as Bowman and freshman guard Bella Pucci combined to sink seven of their final eight attempts.

"Our players knew what we had to do today," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We talk about it every day in practice. We played good, disciplined defense and took care of the basketball. We've been telling our players all season how special of a group they are and they are really believing in themselves right now."

Binghamton shot 47.8 percent from the game (22-of-46) and went a stellar 18-of-19 from the free throw line (92.9). The Bearcats' 66 points came against a Vermont team that entered the game ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense (53.0 ppg.).

Both teams took care of the basketball with the Bearcats committing only 10 miscues to eight for Vermont. The Bearcats, however, came up with a pair of crucial steals in the last five minutes of the game.

Binghamton held a commanding 33-20 rebounding advantage. Fauria and Weltz each had six of those rebounds. Eleven of Binghamton's rebounds came at the offensive end of the court.

Keira Hanson added 10 points while Delaney Richason grabbed six rebounds.

Binghamton travels to UAlbany on Thursday for an 11 a.m. game.
