DELAND, Fla. – Senior pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux got a win on the mound, homered and drove in three runs, highlighting Binghamton's split in the first day of the Frank Griffin Softball Classic on Friday at Patricia Wilson Field. The Bearcats were blanked 8-0 in six innings by former America East member Boston University (1-0) in their first game but held off host Stetson (0-1) 6-5 in the nightcap.
L'Amoreaux hit a team-best .500 at the plate during the day, going 3-for-6 with a double to go along with her home run. Against Stetson, she tied her career highs for both hits (three) and RBI (three) and set her career high with seven total bases. L'Amoreaux also threw the first 4.1 innings against the Hatters to improve to 1-0 this season.
In the top of the first inning against Stetson, L'Amoreaux doubled home the first run of the game. Two innings later, she and redshirt junior
Shelby Carvalho belted solo homers, padding the lead to 3-0.
Stetson got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Lath Freeman clubbed a two-run home run. The Bearcats responded, however, with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. L'Amoreaux and junior outfielder
Sarah Rende came through with RBI singles and freshman catch
Elisa Allen had an RBI ground out during that frame.
The Hatters pulled to within 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning but sophomore pitcher
Brianna Roberts retired the final three batters to record the save.
The loss was tagged to Lauren Hobbs, whose record fell to 0-1.
Rende and junior designated player
Brianna Santos each went 2-for-4 against Stetson. Santos and L'Amoreaux each finished the win with a team-best two runs scored.
In the opening game of the day, the Bearcats were no-hit by Kasey Ricard of Boston. She allowed only a pair of baserunners and struck out 10 Binghamton batters to raise her record to 1-0.
Offensively, the Terriers were led by Brooke Deppiesse, who hit a three-run home run.
Roberts started the first game and allowed six runs through five innings to take the loss. Two of the runs she allowed, however, were unearned. Her record is now 0-1.
Binghamton returns to the field for Day Two at the Frank Griffin Classic on Saturday with games against SIUE at 9:30 a.m. and a rematch against Stetson at 3 p.m.
NOTES: The seven total bases by L'Amoreaux against Stetson represents the most by a Binghamton player since Santos recorded that same number against Bryant on April 15, 2023 … L'Amoreaux set her career highs of three hits and three RBI in that same game against the Bulldogs last year … the Terriers, who are currently receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 Poll, went 52-10 in 2023 and won the Patriot League title. They left the America East Conference following the 2013-14 academic year.
