HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Binghamton softball team (11-7) wrapped up its weekend at the James Madison/Weiler Orthodontics Tournament with a pair of defeats on Sunday at the Bank of the James Field. The Bearcats were edged 4-2 by St. Joseph's before losing James Madison 9-1 in five innings.
In the opener against the Hawks, the Bearcats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux singled home the first run and scored one batter later on a double by freshman catcher
Elisa Allen.
From there, however, Riley York of St. Joseph's was the offensive star of the game. First, she homered in the bottom of the second inning, trimming the deficit to 2-1. Then, she broke up a 2-2 tie with a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bearcats went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.
Jules Scogna raised her record to 1-1 after coming on in relief in the top of the sixth inning and holding the Bearcats hitless over 2.0 innings. L'Amoreaux went the distance and struck out eight batters but her record fell to 5-1.
Allen finished 2-for-3 against St. Joseph's.
Binghamton had six hits and drew a pair of walks against the Hawks but left seven runners on base.
Facing a James Madison team in the nightcap that went 29-18 last season, the Bearcats stayed within 1-0 through the middle of the third inning. Sophomore pitcher
Brianna Roberts had four strikeouts in the first two innings and even struck out the side in the bottom of the second inning.
Bella Henzler keyed a three-run bottom of the third inning for James Madison when she belted a two-run home run. That frame gave the Dukes a 4-0 edge.
Roberts broke the shutout when she was credited with an RBI on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth inning.
The Dukes then finished off the game with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Four different James Madison players – including Henzler – homered during that frame.
Alissa Humphrey pitched the final three innings and was credited with the win. Her record is now 6-2. Roberts was tagged with the loss and is now 3-4.
Redshirt junior
Brianna Santos went 3-for-7 (.429) in the two games on Sunday to finish the four-game tournament with a team-best .500 batting average (7-for-14). Sophomore outfielder
Bella Farina was 4-for-10 (.400).
Binghamton heads to the Penn State Invitational this coming Saturday-Sunday.
