Softball rolls to pair of wins at Penn State tourney

Bearcats topple Lehigh, 14-4, Cornell 9-1 in lopsided five-inning affairs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Binghamton softball (13-7) rolled to a pair of lopsided wins on the opening day of the Penn State Invitational Saturday at NLSP and Beard Field. The Bearcats toppled Lehigh 14-4 in five innings and then defeated Cornell 9-1 in five innings.

Sophomore DP Brianna Roberts collected six hits and four RBI in the two games and earned the pitching win in the nightcap - her fourth of the season.

In the opener, BU snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs in the fourth and then exploded for eight runs in the fifth to close out the victory.

In the fourth, senior pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux dropped down a squeeze bunt to bring in junior outfielder Brianna Santos with the go-ahead run for a 5-4 lead. Roberts then delivered an RBI single to make it 6-4. In the fifth, BU sent 13 to the plate and scored eight runs on seven hits, the final of which was a two-run single by graduate first baseman Alex Musial that closed out the scoring.

L'Amoreaux (W, 5-1) scattered four hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts.

Roberts went 4-for-4 with three RBI, Santos had three hits and two RBI and sophomore outfielder Bella Farina added three hits and an RBI.

In the win over Cornell, the Bearcats trailed 1-0 before scoring nine straight runs over the final four innings. Binghamton jumped ahead for good with two runs in the second inning and then added two more in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to close out the 23-run day.

Senior third baseman Shelby Carvalho swung the big bat with two home runs and four RBI. Carvalho went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer in the second, a solo shot in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth. That was more than enough for Roberts (W, 4-4), who limited the Big Red to one hit over the final four scoreless frames. She had seven strikeouts and added two hits and an RBI at the plate.

L'Amoreaux moved from the circle to first base and had two hits and two RBI. Junior outfielder Lindsey Walter legged out an inside-the-park home run in the third inning and finished with two RBI.

The Bearcats finish up the two-day invitational with another matchup against Cornell (12:30 p.m.) followed by a test against the host Nittany Lions at 3 p.m.
