Softball splits pair at Penn State Invite, finishes 3-1

Bearcats blank Cornell 6-0, fall to host Nittany Lions 15-5

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Binghamton softball (14-8) split two games on the final day of the Penn State Invitational, defeating Cornell 6-0 before losing to the host Nittany Lions 15-5 Sunday at Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field. The Bearcats finished the tournament with a 3-1 mark after a 2-0 opening day.

Playing Cornell for the second time in as many days, BU snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth and then added three more in the sixth for the final margin. Sophomore pitcher Olivia Kennedy (W, 3-1) went the distance and held the Big Red scoreless on six hits. She struck out six.

In the fifth frame, BU sent seven to the plate and scored three runs on four hits. Freshman catcher Elisa Allen led off with a double down the left field line. After an infield single by senior third baseman Shelby Carvalho, freshman second baseman Maddy Dodig brought home Allen with a sacrifice fly, giving BU the only run it would need. Three batters later, junior outfielder Brianna Santos delivered a two-run single, bumping the lead up to 3-0.

In the sixth, BU tacked on three more runs on three hits. After a one-out single by sophomore DP Brianna Roberts, Allen drilled a two-run home run over the left field wall for a 5-0 cushion. It was her third of the season. Three hitters later, junior Gabby Guerrero hit an RBI double to close out the scoring.

Allen finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBI, Santos had two RBI and Guerrero went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the afternoon, BU ran into a 20-6 Penn State team that is coming off back-to-back 30-win seasons. The Nittany Lions jumped out of the gate with 11 runs on eight hits in the first inning. Despite outscoring their Big Ten hosts 5-4 the rest of the way, the Bearcats couldn't overcome the big deficit.

Binghamton scored four runs in the second inning and added a fifth run in the fourth before the game was halted after five.

Santos went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Junior center fielder Lindsey Walter and sophomore outfield mate Bella Farina added RBIs.

The Bearcats open America East play with a three-game set at Bryant next weekend in Smithfield, R.I.
