Softball Splits AE Doubleheader at Bryant

Bearcats drop opener 4-0, bounce back to win nightcap 5-2

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore pitcher Brianna Roberts drove in a pair of runs and got a complete-game victory, highlighting Binghamton's split against Bryant in an America East doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Conaty Park. The Bearcats (15-9, 1-1 AE) were shut out 4-0 by the Bulldogs (13-7, 1-1 AE) in the first game but rallied to win the finale 5-2.

Roberts went the full seven innings in the second game, scattering two runs on seven hits and striking out four batters. Her record is now 5-5.

Offensively, freshman second baseman Maddy Dodig had a two-run single in the top of the second inning, putting the Bearcats ahead 2-0. One inning later, Roberts singled home another two runs, padding the lead to 4-0. Junior outfielder Sarah Rende then clubbed a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning, extending the Bearcats' advantage to 5-0.

Bryant trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Sam Rohwer. From there, however, Roberts tossed three shutout innings to lock up the win.

Rende and junior left fielder Brianna Santos each went 2-for-3 in the win. Rende also scored a team-best two runs.

The loss was tagged to Caroline Paolantonio, whose record dropped to 3-1.

In the opener, Kylie Kenney fired a four-hit shutout and struck out 11 Binghamton batters to improve to 4-4 on the year. Offensively, the Bulldogs got single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings as well as two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

For the Bearcats, senior pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux held Bryant scoreless over the first three innings but departed after the fifth inning. She scattered two runs on seven hits and struck out five batters but her record fell to 6-2.

Santos hit .571 during the two games, going 4-for-7 in the process. Redshirt junior third baseman Shelby Carvalho went 2-for-5 (.400).

Binghamton and Bryant are scheduled to conclude their weekend series with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
