Wrestling Season Ends on Day Two of NCAA Championships

Lou DePrez, Brevin Cassella and Cory Day each finish tournament with two wins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Binghamton wrestling team's season came to an end Friday after its three remaining wrestlers were eliminated from the NCAA Wrestling Championships at T-Mobile Center.

Lou DePrez finished his storied Binghamton career one win away from earning his third All-America honors after winning his first two matches on Thursday. Both Cassella and Day won their opening match on Friday in the consolation bracket. With each wrestler having won two matches throughout the tournament, this marks the first time at least three Binghamton wrestlers won that many matches at nationals since 2012. That year, Donnie Vinson, Nick Gwiazdowski, Justin Lister, Nate Schiedel and Cody Reed each won at least two matches. Vinson and Gwiazdowski both earned All-America honors, with Vinson finishing third and Gwiazdowski finishing eighth.

"Thank you to Lou, thank you to Jacob [Nolan], thank you to Cory and thank you to Brevin," said Binghamton Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "Those guys put the team on their back, and I'm very appreciative of that."

Session Three
DePrez's first opponent was the national runner-up in 2023, No. 3 seed Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State. The two wrestlers grappled early. But Sloan continued to attack on offense and built his lead. Once he gained a riding time point at the end, Sloan secured a 16-1 technical fall, becoming the first wrestler this season to get a technical fall against DePrez.

Before that match, Cassella faced off against No. 17 Tyler Lillard of Indiana. After both wrestlers fought to a scoreless tie in the first period, Cassella began the second on top of Lillard. Cassella was able to ride Lillard for the entire two minutes of the frame. That proved to be the difference, as neither wrestler was able to record a point. Cassella would earn the riding time point at the end and advance with a 1-0 win.

With the win, Cassella reached 30 victories on the season. He became the first Bearcat to win at least 30 matches in a season since DePrez won 33 in 2018-19.

Day's first match of the day was a rematch against No. 15 Lewis Fernandes of Cornell, who pinned Day at the EIWA Championships. Much like Cassella's opening match, Day and Fernandes fought to a scoreless tie in the opening three minutes. This time, it was Fernandes that began the second period on top of Day. 16 seconds into the period, Day was able to roll Fernandes on his back and get the pin to advance. This marked Day's 12th pin of the season, 11 of which have come against Division I opponents.

It would turn out to be the last victories of the season for Cassella and Day, as both wrestlers would be eliminated in the third round of the consolation bracket. Cassella would lose to No. 7 Izzak Olejnik of Oklahoma State 7-2, while Day was taken down by No. 7 Taye Ghadiali of Campbell 14-3.

Session Four
DePrez would get another chance to make it to the podium. His next opponent was No. 9 Stephen Little of Little Rock. Both wrestlers were able to keep their distance from each other during the scoreless first period. Little escaped DePrez to open the second, but DePrez would get a point back after Little was penalized for an illegal hold. In the third, DePrez would take a 2-1 lead after he escaped Little. DePrez would defend the lead up until the final seconds of the period. With less than 10 seconds remaining, DePrez was penalized for stalling, giving Little a point to tie the match at two. A coach's challenge would prove to be unsuccessful for Binghamton, and the match would go into overtime. There, Little would take DePrez down to advance to the podium, and end DePrez's Binghamton career in the process.
