MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senior right fielder
Mike Gunning belted a pair of 3-run home runs in a 12-run sixth inning as Binghamton baseball (11-13) completed a three-game sweep of Middle Tennessee (10-15) with a 14-3 win Saturday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field. The win over the Conference USA Blue Raiders ran BU's win streak to four.
The Bearcats trailed 3-1 before sending 15 men to the plate in the decisive sixth, when BU scored 12 runs on seven hits. The two biggest blows came from Gunning, who ran his league-leading home run count to 10 and his team-high RBI tally to 27. Before Gunning began his big inning, junior DH
Evin Sullivan tied the game with a two-run single to left center. Sullivan added a sacrifice fly later in the inning before Gunning drilled his second long ball of the frame. Senior first baseman
Andrew Tan collected two hits and an RBI in the inning.
The offensive explosion made a winner out of senior starter
Nelson Berkwich (W, 2-3), who worked 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Berkwich struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
Gunning totaled six RBI and Sullivan had three. Tan and sophomore shortstop
Mike Stellrecht had two hits and an RBI apiece and senior center fielder
Tommy Reifler added two RBI.
The Bearcats next head to Olean for a Tuesday non-conference game against St. Bonaventure.
