Baseball drops UMass Lowell 5-1 behind Driscoll, Roselli

Bearcats stretch win streak to five, open weekend series with win

VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior ace Gabe Driscoll pitched a four-hit complete game and junior second baseman Nick Roselli celebrated his return from injury with a home run and three RBI as Binghamton baseball (12-13, 3-4 America East) handled visiting UMass Lowell (9-13, 2-4 AE) 5-1 Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Stadium.

Driscoll pitched BU's first 9-inning, regular-season complete game in 12 years and earned his fourth win of the season. Driscoll retired the side in order in six innings, amassed nine strikeouts and allowed only a single run in the fifth inning. With the longest stint of his career, Driscoll lowered his season ERA to 3.50. He worked out of a mini-jam in the seventh with a runner on second, thanks to back-to-back strikeouts. He then ended the game with his ninth strikeout.

After missing seven weeks with an injury, Roselli returned to the lineup and didn't waste any time. In the first inning, senior center fielder Tommy Reifler singled to left field and Roselli came to the plate for the first time in 50 days and sent a 2-2 pitch well over the right field wall for a 2-run home run and a quick 2-0 BU lead. The shot, Roselli's second of the season, traveled at 107 MPH and went some 420 feet.

Roselli added another RBI in his second at-bat. In the bottom of the second, sophomore shortstop Mike Stellrecht led off with a walk and Reifler shot a 1-out double down the left field line, putting runners on second and third. Roselli plated Stellrecht with a sacrifice fly to right and junior left fielder Logan Haskell followed with a 2-out RBI single off the pitcher's leg to make it 4-0.

After UML got on the board with two singles and a walk in the fifth, BU scored the game's final run in the seventh. With one out, Reifler dropped a perfect drag bunt between the pitcher and first baseman and Roselli collected his second hit of the game with a single. With runners on first and third, Haskell put down a squeeze bunt that scored Reifler to make it 5-1.

Reifler went 4-for-4, Roselli wound up 2-for-3 with three RBI and Haskell finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. The top three hitters in the lineup accounted for all eight Bearcat hits.

The teams will close the series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
