VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting UMass Lowell (11-17, 4-4 America East) clipped Binghamton baseball's five-game win streak with a doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. The Bearcats (12-15, 3-6 AE) were beaten 7-5 and 17-4.
In the opener, BU led 4-2 in the sixth of the seven-inning game before surrendering five runs in the final two frames. In the nightcap, the River Hawks scored in seven of nine innings for the lopsided win.
In Game 1, the Bearcats erased an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the second and one in the third to pull ahead 3-1. After UML got one back in the fourth, BU answered in the fifth and were five outs away from a win before things unraveled in the sixth. The River Hawks plated four runs on four hits to pull ahead 6-4. Each team scored a run in the seventh. Binghamton put its first two runners on base and scored a run on an RBI double by graduate first baseman
Sam Haney. But with the bases loaded and two out, a lineout to right field ended the threat one hit short of completing the rally.Â
Binghamton missed golden chances to score more runs early in the contest after loading the bases in both the second (with no outs) and fourth innings but left them loaded in each frame and wound up stranding 10 for the game.
Senior right fielder
Mike Gunning hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season - a solo shot in the third inning. He went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Junior third baseman
Devan Bade went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Haney added two hits and an RBI. Senior starter
Nelson Berkwich had a no-decision after allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.Â
In Game 2, BU was gifted a pair of unearned first inning runs on an odd outfield throwing error but the offense stalled and UML revved its up with 10 consecutive runs. The River Hawks scored in five straight innings and amassed 18 hits off six BU pitchers.Â
Gunning went 2-for-4 with an RBI to finish off a solid day at the plate (5-for-8) and senior center fielder
Tommy Reifler and junior second baseman
Nick Roselli had two hits apiece.Â
Binghamton hosts Le Moyne in a single game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.  Â
