Softball Sweeps UMBC 7-1 and 3-1

Bearcats finish off 3-0 weekend against defending AE champions

VESTAL, N.Y. --  Senior pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux and sophomore pitchers Olivia Kennedy and Brianna Roberts allowed a combined total of just two runs, leading Binghamton (20-10, 4-2 AE) to a 7-1, 3-1 sweep over UMBC (14-12, 3-3 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the wins, the Bearcats finish off their three games sweep over the Retrievers and have now won their last five games. Binghamton won Friday's single game – also by a 3-1 margin.

L'Amoreaux went the distance in the first game on Saturday, scattering one run on four hits and striking out five batters. She did not issue a walk and raised her record to 7-2.
Kennedy pitched the first six innings of the nightcap, allowing only one unearned run on three hits and striking out seven batters. Her record is now 4-2.

Roberts meanwhile, came on in the seventh inning of the second games and struck out three batters to nail down her conference-best fourth save of the season. For the weekend against UMBC, she was 1-0 with a 0.88 ERA. In eight innings during the conference series, Roberts struck out 12 batters.

Offensively, the Bearcats homed three times in each game on Saturday and finished the day with a .300 batting average.

Freshman second baseman Maddy Dodig went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, homered and had a pair of RBI. Redshirt junior outfielder Lindsey Walter was 3-for-7 (.429) and also homered. L'Amoreaux, meanwhile, was 2-for-6 with a double and a home run.

In the opener, the Bearcats broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 5-0. The big blow of the frame was a two-run homer by senior first baseman Alex Musial.

Dodig made it 6-0 with a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning. Walter then capped the Bearcats' scoring with an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

L'Amoreaux nearly got the shutout but Amaya Lundy belted a solo home run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

The loss in the first game was tagged to Jerzie Nutile, who is now 4-3.

Walter and redshirt junior outfielder Brianna Santos each went 2-for-4 in the first game. Santos' two hits were both doubles.

In the nightcap, Kennedy was backed up offensively by three solo home runs. Redshirt junior shortstop Gabby Guerrero smacked her second homer of the weekend in the bottom of the second inning. L'Amoreaux led off the bottom of the third inning with her third home run of the season while senior catcher Hailey Ehlers led off the bottom of the fourth inning with her first homer of the year.

UMBC took advantage of a fielding error to break the shutout in the top of the sixth inning. They then left the tying run on third base when the game ended one inning later.

"I am super proud of our team," head coach Jess Bump. "UMBC is a really good team and are well coached so it was great to see all facets of our game come together this weekend."

Kya Mater went the full six innings for UMBC but took the loss, dropping her record to 6-7.

Santos finished the doubleheader with a team-best .600 batting average while Musial and Ehlers both went 1-for-3 (.333).

For the three game-series, Dodig hit a team-best .571 (4-for-7), homered, score three times and drove in three runs. Santos hit .500 (4-for-8), Walter was 3-for-8 (.375) and L'Amoreaux was 3-for-9 (.333). On the mound, meanwhile, Roberts, L'Amoreaux and Kennedy held the Retrievers to a .135 batting average and posted a combined ERA of 0.67.

Binghamton is scheduled to host Massachusetts in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
