JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Host East Tennessee State (10-3) scored the game's final three runs in the late innings to overtake Binghamton baseball (3-7) 7-5 Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.
The Bearcats scored twice in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. But the Bucs countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and added another in the eighth to close out the scoring.
ETSU jumped ahead 3-0 with three runs in the third. Binghamton tied it with three in the fourth but the Bucs started the see-saw sequence with one run in the bottom of the inning. The Bearcats left nine men stranded for the game.
Senior center fielder
Tommy Reifler went 2-for-3 with two RBI and his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning gave BU a 5-4 lead. Binghamton scored twice in the inning without the benefit of a hit. Senior DH
Andrew Tan led off with a walk and successive sacrifice bunts resulted in throwing errors, allowing Tan to score an unearned run. With runners on second and third, Reifler flied out to left field, scoring sophomore shortstop
Mike Stellrecht with the go-ahead run.
But ETSU also was fortuitous with two runs on only one hit in their half of the frame. And the Bucs added an insurance run on a walk and two singles in the eighth.
The Bearcats were limited to six hits – five singles and a double. Junior catcher
Evin Sullivan went 2-for-5 to join Reifler in the multi-hit club. Binghamton used five pitchers, with freshman
Jackson Mitchell and graduate
Theo Farynick having the most success. Each went 2.0 innings and allowed a run on two hits.
