Weltner surpasses 200 career draws, Suau reaches 50 career caused turnovers

CONWAY, S.C. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team (4-3), dropped a tight, 12-11, overtime game to Coastal Carolina (3-3), Wednesday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.

Despite the loss, BU led the home team in nearly every statistical category as a team. The Bearcats owned a 25-18 shots on goal and a 16-11 draw controls advantage. Binghamton also led the game with 18 ground balls compared to CCU's 13.

Abigail Carroll highlighted action for BU once again, registering a team-best six points (3G, 3A) in the defeat. Olivia Muscolino followed with four points (4G) while Hayley Weltner added three (1G, 2A). Carla Curth, Madison Murphy and Mia Forte also found the back of the net for Binghamton with one goal apiece.

Kristen Scheidel recorded a Bearcat-best seven draw controls while Carroll notched six. Weltner surpassed 200 career draw controls with three against the Chanticleers.

Angelina Suau also hit a career milestone in the loss with two caused turnovers bringing her to 50 all-time.

Carroll opened up the afternoon's scoring for Binghamton just 38 seconds into the first quarter to give BU the early lead. Both teams went back and forth in the next minutes, posting one goal each to make it 2-1 in the Bearcats favor.

CCU notched three unanswered goals next to take back the lead, 4-2, before Carroll closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals to tie it at 4-4 heading into the second frame.

Coastal Carolina grabbed two goals to start the second quarter until Curth struck to cut the Chanticleer advantage to one at 6-5. CCU scored two more next to close out the first half up 8-5.

Binghamton didn't back down in the third quarter, netting four goals to the home team's one to come out of the frame tied once again. BU's equalizer came from Murphy off an assist from Carroll to make it a 9-9 game.

Muscolino and Weltner put up back-to-back goals to start the final frame, giving the Bearcats a 11-9 lead before Coastal Carolina answered back with two of its own scores to tie the contest at 11 at the end of regulation.

The Chanticleers then claimed the overtime victory on a woman-up free position goal from Sydney McClure to end the game 12-11 in favor of CCU.

Next up, BU returns home to host Niagara, Saturday, March 9 at the Bearcat Sports Complex. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
